What the heck, why is this happening?
As Strike Theater is committed to bending genres and learning from each other. Also, it's winter in the midwest. We need something fun to do!
Allison's parents live on Lake Holcombe and she had the idea to do a sleepover camp style event at the local hotel. Mike really wants to hang out with lots of fun people, so he thought we should have equal parts learning and fun options. With that ComCon was born.
How long has ComCon existed?
This is it's third year! We hope the first of many, so think about coming and helping form what it is!
Who can come?
Anybody that is over 21 and wants a winter get away all about Comedy. Stand-ups, Sketch Writers, Storytellers, Improvisors and other self-identifying funny people, this is for you. A big part of this is getting to know each other and building connections to different scenes, venues, and cities. We'll have opportunities for comic speed dating, just hanging out, and plenty of chances to meet new people.
I'm brand new, is this for me?
Yeah. Come ready to learn and this is for you. We want to drill down on topics like how stand-ups craft punchline after punchline and how you can use those techniques in storytelling or sketch writing. Things like that. We're up for sharing and that makes us all a little new.
I'm an old hack, is this for me?
Heck yeah! The organizing committee has been doing their thing for a long long time and we are crafting something that digs into comedy is a way we haven't experienced yet. We think you'll find a lot of value in that. There's also a chance for registrants to be a mentor or lead round table discussions on the topics of their choice, so we'd love to learn from you. And you can choose to be the old guy floating on a swan in the pool and just sharing your stories if that's your place in this world. We won't judge.
Is this like a brain melting boring conference?
Nope. While there will be plenty of learning opportunities, you get to drive your own boat. If you want to be busy all day working on your art you can. You can take breaks to hang out and have fun whenever you want. There's a 24 hour game room, there's chances to learn some improv games, watch funny movies, swim, hot tub, sauna, play pool or Buck Hunter, eat all the fish you can on Friday night, and whatever other things you might want to do. You choose how much relaxing you do with your closest comedy friends and how much you dive into the awesome sessions available to you. Full schedule will be released soon.
Can I drink?
Yeah. We're here to relax and have a good time. There is a bar and restaurant in the hotel with very affordable prices and comedy themed drink specials. We ask that you are responsible and that if somebody gently asks you to maybe drink some water and hang out in your room for awhile that you respect them. Please don't ruin anybody's fun.
What time does everything start? Should I still come if I can't get there until after work on Friday or Saturday morning?
We'll have a soft start reception Thursday night. Friday morning we will dive in. You have the option of coming during the day, or getting there for there after work on Friday. Saturday we'll have full programming offerings from 9am-9pm. Sunday is check-out, friend brunch, creative sharing and the closing ceremonies. You are more than invited to stay Thursday or Sunday nights at a discount. Just book your room when you call!
Are day passes available?
We only have the full festival pass at $120 (lodging not included) but you are welcome to join us for any part of ComCon that you can whether that's just a day or the she-bang.
What should I bring?
A openness to learning, teaching, meeting new people and having fun.
Your computer or writing gear.
Swimsuit if you are water bound.
Outside gear if you want to go around the fire or hike out in the snow or make snow angels or things like that.
Dress comfortably. We think sweatpants are the best!
You can bring food and drinks for your fridge. There is a C-store down the street and full grocery store about 7 miles away.
Bring any games or art supplies you'd like to share in the chill room for the weekend.
Bring your knitting, books you are reading, movies you want to watch, pinata you want us to bash in. All that good stuff.
